Significant changes proposed to US consular fees

The Department of State, the agency which oversees all United States Embassies and Consulates around the world, has published an Interim Final Rule today announcing changes to consular fees. Some fees have gone up, while others have gone down. The biggest change (a 422% increase) pertains to the fee charged to US citizens who wish to abandon United States citizenship, which DOS is proposing to increase from the current $450 to a $2,350. The E non-immigrant visa classification will see a 24% fee reduction under the proposals from the current $270 to a new fee of $205. These are just a few of the changes set out under the Interim Final Rule, set to come into effect on 6 September 2014. The Department of State is accepting written comments on the proposed changes until 21 October 2014. Read the full Interim Final Rule here.
